Orocobre Ltd is building a substantial Argentinian-based industrial chemicals and minerals company through the construction and operation of its portfolio of lithium, potash and boron projects and facilities.

Orocobre is building the first large–scale, de-novo brine based lithium project in 20 years at its flagship Salar de Olaroz resource. This enables Orocobre to join the three existing low-cost brine producers, with 17,500 tonnes per annum of phase one production of battery grade lithium carbonate. First commercial production is projected to be the end of August 2014.

Toyota Tsusho Corporation is the company’s strategic partner for the Olaroz Lithium Project, and has provided the capital required to build the operation through a combination of its purchase of 25% of the project equity and through the provision of project debt financing guaranteed by TTC during the construction phase and guaranteed by a Japanese government organization (JOGMEC) post operational commissioning. This strategic partnership has made it possible to finance the project on a highly favourable basis, and to be able to effectively market subsequent battery grade lithium production into Japanese and Asian markets.

The company expanded its industrial minerals operational capabilities in northern Argentina with the August 2012 purchase of Borax Argentina from Rio Tinto. This acquisition is an important strategic step for Orocobre, moving the company to producer status within the same region that its flagship Olaroz Lithium Project is being built. Borax Argentina owns one of the few important borate deposits globally, and has a significant quantity of estimated mineralisation for long-life output.

Beyond current operations and Phase One of the Olaroz Project, Orocobre is well positioned for substantial growth through the expansion potential of Salar de Olaroz, the tapping of potential of its Salar de Cauchari property for additional production at the Olaroz operations, and through the future development of its pipeline of future lithium, potash and borate in the Puna region of northern Argentina.
