Description

Aditya Birla Minerals (ABY) is a copper producer and explorer, and is based in Perth WA. ABY has mining and exploration activities at Birla Nifty Copper Operation (BNCO) in the Great Sandy Desert, WA and Mt Gordon Copper Operation (MGO) located in the Mt Isa Block, QLD. ABY produced 67,640t of copper for FY 2008-09. Concentrates produced are shipped to the Hindalco-owned 500,000 tpa rated Dahej copper smelter in India.

Birla Nifty Copper Operation (BNCO)

BNCO consists of a long hole open stope with cemented and sand back-fill, an underground crusher and conveyor, and a conventional crushing / flotation circuit to produce copper. During the year 2008-09, the mine produced 49,600t of copper from underground operation. The heap leach solvent extraction – electrowinning processing plant (SX-EW) was suspended in early 2009 after producing 2696t during the year 2008-09. BNCO commenced ore production from underground via open stope methods in December 2005 and concentrate production from March 2006. There was a progressive ramp up period and underground production for the year 2008-09 was 1.95mtpa.

Birla Mt Gordon Copper Operation (BMGO)

The Mt Gordon operation consisted of a sub-level open stoping mining method through a conventional decline which produced about 1.0Mt of ore until January 2009 for the year 2008-09. Ore was processed in conventional crushing / flotation circuit to produce 17,815t copper (FY 2008-09). Operations were suspended in January 2009 due to the steep decline in copper price. The mine is in care and maintenance since then.

Exploration

Aditya Birla Minerals maintain an active exploration team at Nifty and Mt Gordon with both regional and near-mine activities.

Hindalco Industries Limited (Hindalco) has a 51.0 per cent shareholding in ABY. Hindalco is Asia’s largest integrated aluminium producer and a growing producer of copper metal from copper in concentrate. Hindalco is a member of the Aditya Birla Group, which is one of India’s largest conglomerate.
