The big question, for me at least, is: Has the Australian gas share index started to bottom out or is there more to come on the downside?
I feel that I don't know enough about the recent changes along the value chain and I am having great difficulty working out where the politics of CSM and Shale Gas are headed.
A year ago the Australian Greens seemed happy for gas to take over the role as the transition energy source for electricity production, but recently they seem to be intent on transitioning straight to renewables; even though the chances of being able to do that seem to be negligible if we are to maintain our manufacturing industries let alone heat/cool our houses etc.One recent pointer that the Greens haven't influenced the near term gas producers' prospects is the remarkable gain in BOW's share price following AOE's lunge.
But on the other hand the Australian gas share index is looking quite sorry, but does this represent a buying opportunity for long term holders?
And where will the current news focus on ground water, fraccing and methane leakage lead?
So many questions that need to be explored and answered! In my next post I will present part of the answer to the "education issues I face".
Below is the Australian Gas Share Index chart for the last 12 months....

(It doesn't look pretty but compared to the Australian Uranium Share Index chart it looks a lot better)
So time to invest in gas? Or get educated first across a wide range of topics at The Australia Gas 2011 Conference, Sydney 31/October - 2 November, 2011 ? -
Seems like the Australian gas share index has started to lift http://www.australian-gas.com/australian-gas-share-index-chart.html

Hi Sparty, Gas comes in many forms and from many sources. Some are thought to endanger our ground water supplies and others our marine life. But I agree the time of gas as an energy source is now and finding the gas source / location is the investment game of the moment. Alite

I have withdrawn for the CSM/Shale gas plays that are near good farming land. At the moment I hold WPL and several very speculative oil and gas plays. I'm considering buying OSH but have reservations re country risk.
Perhaps I'm overplaying my concerns re the farming/underground water issues but perhaps AWE is a reflection/example of how it will go.

Hi Sparty, I have been looking at Drillsearch (DLS), Beach Petroleum (BPL) and Senex (SXY) as shale gas plays... though I'm yet to buy into any of these companies. All are in Australia's Cooper basin. I don't think there is a lot of prime farming land on the NSW border of S.A. They are in a current oil producing area and so energy production is not new to the people in the area but are still working in an area that could affect the great artesian basin. Have you looked at these companies? Any thoughts?

Hi Alite, I think you on the right track looking for CSM/Shale plays in arid regions. LNC and CTP are certainly within this thematic...
